Centre of Expertise

The Centre of Expertise Programme has been used since 1994 to encourage the different regions of Finland to utilise their top expertise in order to do better in the tightening international competition. Smooth co-operation between industry and research is an essential element of the innovation environments of the regions which have become more attractive objects of research and development investments also for international companies.
The new programme period 2007–2013 brought many changes to the way of working. The new centres of expertise are now extensive, industry-specific but nation-wide clusters. See the OSKE net english website.

Centre of Expertise of Southwest Finland

Learn from the best

The Southwest Finland Centre of Expertise supports the region's traditional strengths in pharmaceutical and diagnostic industries, shipyard industry, and food industry. Comprehensive IT expertise is an important element in the development of all other lines of business as well, and it is also closely linked to the branding of services in creative and culture fields.

Well-functioning co-operation between industry and academic research creates an innovation environment that will become a target of research and development investments for foreign companies, too. Co-operation with the best international experts of biosciences and medicine - such as the joint venture with the Swedish Karolinska Institutet and co-operation with the German Heidelberg Technologiepark - contributes to strengthening the expertise base in Southwest Finland and the whole country.

In the programme period 2007-2013 Turku Region participates in six different Competence Clusters: HealthBIO cluster, Maritime cluster, Tourism and Experience Management cluster, Food Development cluster, Ubiquitous cluster, and Nanotechnology cluster.

Turku has the national responsibility for coordination of two clusters; the HealthBIO cluster is coordinated by Turku Science Park Oy, and the Maritime cluster by Koneteknologiakeskus Turku Oy.

Turku Science Park Ltd is responsible for fitting together the regional projects of the Centre of Expertise of Southwest Finland.
